One step can be useful when the label fits
A moisturizer with sunscreen can simplify a morning routine. It still needs to be applied as sunscreen: in an adequate amount, before exposure, with reapplication according to its directions. A small moisturizer-sized dab does not automatically provide the protection stated on the package.
For oily skin, compare the maker's finish description. For sensitive skin, check fragrance and personal allergens. For exercise, read the water-resistance and reapplication instructions rather than assuming every moisturizer-SPF is limited to office use or suitable for sport.
For a matte finish
Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30 is positioned as an oil-absorbing, matte moisturizer with broad-spectrum protection. The maker identifies it as fragrance-free.
That is a relevant starting point for someone whose main concern is shine. It does not establish that the formula will remain matte on every face or be comfortable if it migrates into the eyes.
For a daily moisturizing lotion
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Facial Moisturizer with SPF 30 is a fragrance-free broad-spectrum option. Its directions call for water-resistant sunscreen when swimming or sweating.
CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 is another daily moisturizer with broad-spectrum labeling. Its combination of zinc oxide and other UV filters makes it a hybrid rather than a mineral-only formula. A person choosing strictly mineral filters should not assume otherwise because the product contains zinc oxide.
Read Vanicream's two statements together
Vanicream Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 uses zinc oxide. Its official FAQ says the formula passed 40-minute water-resistance testing. The same page's directions nevertheless say to use water-resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating.
Those statements should not be collapsed into an invented sports-use schedule. Follow the directions on your current package, and ask the manufacturer to clarify if needed. The FAQ does not authorize ignoring the package's swimming and sweating advice. The maker also acknowledges that zinc oxide may leave a cast on some complexions.
When a separate sunscreen makes more sense
