The three functions are named the same way in the dermatology literature: humectants attract and bind water, occlusives block its evaporation, and emollients smooth and soften by filling gaps between skin cells (Sethi et al., Moisturizers, StatPearls / NCBI Bookshelf). The category words on the front panel are a rough proxy for one of those three: how much oil is in the formula. The American Academy of Dermatology ranks the spectrum plainly: "A gel is often water-based and tends to feel lighter on the skin than a lotion. A cream is thicker and has higher oil content than a lotion and gel, making it more hydrating. An ointment is the thickest of all" (AAD).

If you buy on that one axis, you will be right more often than the marketing copy allows. If you buy on the words "rich," "light," "intensive" or "deep," you are buying on adjectives no regulator defines and no test measures.

Three jobs, not six product names

Before the categories, the mechanisms: every category below is a different ratio of the same three.

Humectants attract and bind water. The named examples in the literature include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, honey, propylene glycol, sorbitol and the alpha-hydroxy acids (StatPearls). There is an important condition on how they work: humectants hydrate the skin from the air if "the humidity is more than 70%; more commonly, however, they draw water from the deeper epidermis and dermis" (StatPearls). A humectant-only product in dry winter air is therefore doing something different from what the marketing implies, which is precisely why humectants are usually paired with an occlusive.

Occlusives stop water leaving. Named examples include petrolatum, mineral oil, coconut oil, dimethicone, lanolin and beeswax. Petrolatum is described as "a classic example of an occlusive moisturizer and the most effective, reducing water loss through the epidermis by nearly 99%" (StatPearls). That figure is about water loss, not repair; a review of barrier-repair formulations characterises petrolatum's effect as "immediate; incomplete; short-term repair" (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, Journal of Global Health, 2022). Both statements are true at once, and together they explain why an occlusive is a good lid and not a whole strategy.

Emollients smooth and soften by filling the gaps between skin cells; shea butter and ceramides are the named examples (StatPearls).

One further finding is worth carrying into every category below, because it is the strongest published argument against treating "more lipids" as automatically better. The three physiologic lipids of the skin barrier are ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids, and emollients containing them "in a 3:1:1 ratio optimally accelerate barrier recovery after cutaneous insults." In the same paper's summary table, a single lipid species "inhibits barrier recovery," two species also "inhibit barrier recovery," an equimolar mixture of all three "allows normal recovery," and only the optimised molar ratio "accelerates barrier repair." The authors state that "incomplete or imbalanced mixtures aggravate underlying barrier defects" (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, 2022). Note the declared competing interest in that paper: the senior author is a co-inventor of a commercial lipid formulation. The finding is still the clearest published statement that a lone ceramide on an ingredient list is not the same thing as a barrier-repair formula.

Why "rich" and "light" are not specifications

Korean cosmetics law is specific about what has to appear on a package: the product name, the business details, "해당 화장품 제조에 사용된 모든 성분" (every ingredient used in making the product), the volume or weight, the batch number, the expiry, the price and the cautions (화장품법 제10조 기재사항). It is also specific about the order: ingredients are listed "함량이 많은 것부터," from the highest content down, with the exception that ingredients used at 1% or below, plus fragrances and colorants, may appear in any order (화장품 표시기준 및 방법).

That is the specification. It tells you which of the three functional classes is doing most of the work, and roughly in what proportion, down to the 1% line.

The category words are looser than that. Korea's cosmetics classification lists basic skincare product types by names including 로션, 크림, 에센스, 오일, 파우더, 마사지 크림, 팩 and 마스크 (화장품의 개념 및 유형), a classification of product types, not a set of composition thresholds. "Emulsion," "gel cream" and "sleeping mask" are not among the named types at all. They are trade descriptions layered on top, and no test stands behind them.

So read a front panel this way: the category word is a hint about oil content, the adjectives are nothing, and the ingredient list is the specification.

Lotion and emulsion: one idea under two shelf names

On the AAD spectrum, lotion sits between gel and cream: lighter than a cream, heavier than a gel, with less oil than a cream (AAD). "Emulsion" is the word many Korean and Japanese ranges use for a product in that same position, and because it is not a defined product type in the Korean classification (화장품의 개념 및 유형), there is no compositional line separating an emulsion from a lotion. Two products with those two words on the front can be nearly identical, and two products both called emulsion can sit at opposite ends of the oil axis.

Where this matters most is dry skin, and AAD's guidance is unusually direct about it: for dry skin, skip lotions, because "creams are going to add more moisture to the skin and preserve more water than lotion, and ointments even more so." For normal skin, AAD says lotions work for younger people but "everyone 50 and older should be using a cream-based moisturizer" (AAD).

That is the whole case for and against the category. A lotion or emulsion is a sensible daily layer on skin that is not dry, and it is the category most likely to be under-specified for skin that is.

Cream: more oil, more occlusion, the default for genuinely dry skin

A cream is thicker and higher in oil content than a lotion or a gel, which makes it more hydrating, and an ointment is thicker still and "the most effective in remedying dry skin" (AAD). For dry skin, the literature agrees on the direction of travel: choose products with rich, nourishing ingredients in cream or ointment form to seal in moisture, while oily skin does better with a lightweight, oil-free product built on humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin (StatPearls).

Two refinements are worth applying when you compare two creams.

The first is that "more oil" and "better repair" are not the same claim. Petrolatum reduces water loss through the epidermis by nearly 99% (StatPearls) while its barrier repair is characterised as immediate but incomplete and short-term (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, 2022). A heavy occlusive cream is very good at the thing it does. It is not the same product as a balanced physiologic-lipid formula.

The second is timing. AAD's advice is to apply moisturiser right after you get out of the shower to prevent water loss (AAD). For a cream, that is not a minor tip: an occlusive-leaning product works on the water already in the skin.

Gel and gel-cream: a water-led formula for skin that rejects oil

A gel is often water-based and feels lighter than a lotion (AAD). For oily or acne-prone skin, AAD's recommendation is to consider whether a moisturiser is needed at all, and if so to "opt for a gel, which is lighter than other types of moisturizer" (AAD). StatPearls points the same way for oily skin: a lightweight, oil-free product with hyaluronic acid or glycerin, in a gel-based formulation (StatPearls).

"Gel-cream" is a hybrid word for a product positioned between those two, and like "emulsion" it is not a defined product type in the Korean classification (화장품의 개념 및 유형). Treat it as an instruction to read the ingredient list: where the emollients and occlusives appear relative to the 1% line decides whether it behaves like a gel or like a light cream.

The failure mode of this category is specific and predictable. A water-and-humectant formula with very little occlusive relies on humectants that mostly draw water from the deeper epidermis and dermis unless ambient humidity is above 70% (StatPearls). In a dry, heated room, a gel that felt perfect in August can feel like nothing in January. That is the composition behaving as described, not the product failing.

Sleeping mask: a step in a routine, not a regulated category

"Sleeping mask" describes when you use a product, not what is in it. Korea's cosmetics classification does name 팩 and 마스크 as basic skincare product types (화장품의 개념 및 유형), but there is no defined composition, no thickness threshold and no test that distinguishes a sleeping mask from a cream. In practice the category is usually positioned as the most occlusive step in a routine, and the useful question is whether the ingredient list supports that.

Two things from the mechanisms section apply directly.

If the product's job is to hold water in overnight, the relevant ingredients are the occlusives, petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone, lanolin, beeswax and similar (StatPearls), and the honest way to compare two sleeping masks is by where those appear on the list, not by which one says "overnight recovery."

If the product's job is barrier repair, an occlusive layer is the immediate, incomplete, short-term version of that, and a balanced three-lipid mixture is the version with the stronger published claim (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, 2022). A sleeping mask can be either. The name does not tell you which.

We located no published evidence that a product used overnight performs differently from the same composition used in the morning. If that evidence exists we have not verified it, and we are not going to assert it.

Facial oil: emollient and occlusive, with no water phase and no humectant

A facial oil is the one category on this list that structurally cannot do one of the three jobs. With no water phase, it carries no humectant, so it can smooth, soften and reduce water loss, but it cannot add water. Some plant oils are listed among occlusives; coconut oil appears in that list alongside petrolatum and mineral oil (StatPearls), but the more useful finding for a shopper is that oils do not behave as a class.

The published differences run along fatty-acid composition, and they run in both directions:

  • Olive oil. A review of topical plant oils reports that "topically applied olive oil has a detrimental effect on SC integrity and skin barrier function," with increased transepidermal water loss after application to adult forearms, in volunteers with and without atopic dermatitis (Lin et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2018).
  • Sunflower seed oil. The same review reports that sunflower seed oil "has been shown to preserve SC integrity and improve hydration of the adult skin without inducing erythema" (Lin et al., 2018). The proposed mechanism is linoleic acid acting as an agonist at PPAR-α, enhancing keratinocyte proliferation and lipid synthesis and so barrier repair (Lin et al., 2018). A separate paper describes high-linoleate sunflower seed oil (high linoleic acid content, for example above 60%) as improving skin barrier function (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, 2022).
  • Oleic acid. The review states that "oleic acid is detrimental to skin barrier function" and causes barrier disruption, eventually inducing dermatitis under continuous topical application (Lin et al., 2018).
  • Coconut oil. Reported to be as effective and safe as mineral oil as a moisturiser for mild to moderate xerosis (Lin et al., 2018).
  • Neat oil generally. One caution applies to the whole category: use of a neat oil "has the potential to retard skin barrier maturation," and natural vegetable oils vary in content and quality depending on production, processing and storage (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, 2022).

The shopping implication is unusually concrete. For a facial oil, the specific oil named on the ingredient list carries the evidence, and "plant-based," "nourishing" and "natural" carry none of it.

Match the category to the condition you can actually state

Dry, tight, flaking

Cream, or ointment if you will tolerate it. AAD's instruction is to skip lotions here, because creams add more moisture and preserve more water than lotion, and ointments more still (AAD). Look for the ingredients both sources name for dry skin: ceramides and hyaluronic acid (AAD), glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum and shea butter (AAD; StatPearls). Apply straight after the shower (AAD).

Oily or acne-prone

Gel, or a light humectant-led product. AAD suggests considering whether a moisturiser is needed at all, and choosing a gel if it is (AAD); StatPearls specifies lightweight and oil-free with hyaluronic acid or glycerin (StatPearls).

Combination

Two products, or one product used selectively. AAD's guidance for combination skin is to "moisturize the dry spots and skip the oily areas" (AAD), a routine instruction, not a purchase, and the reason a single "balancing" cream is solving a problem the panel invented.

Rough, scaly, itchy patches

Urea is the ingredient with a named mechanism here: it promotes desquamation and improves itching in conditions such as ichthyosis and atopic dermatitis (StatPearls). AAD also lists urea, ceramides, lactic acid and glycerol among the actives a dermatologist may select for dry skin (AAD). Persistent, patchy or itchy skin is a reason to see a clinician rather than to keep buying categories.

A barrier you believe is compromised

This is where composition beats category outright. A balanced three-lipid mixture in the optimised ratio accelerates barrier repair; a single lipid or a pair of them inhibits barrier recovery; and imbalanced mixtures can aggravate an existing defect (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, 2022). No front-panel word (cream, mask, balm, barrier, repair) distinguishes those cases. Only the list does.

Sensitive or easily irritated

AAD's guidance is to avoid alcohol, alpha-hydroxy acid and fragrance, and to look for products labelled fragrance-free, because fragrance can irritate dry skin (AAD). Korean labelling makes that checkable: fragrance may be declared simply as 향료, but if it contains an allergenic component designated by MFDS, that component must be named individually rather than hidden under 향료 (화장품 표시기준 및 방법).

Reading the ingredient list instead of the category

The list is ordered by content from highest down, except for anything used at 1% or below and for fragrances and colorants, which may appear in any order; blended raw materials must be broken out into their individual component names (화장품 표시기준 및 방법). Four checks follow from that structure.

  1. Find the first occlusive. If petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone, lanolin or beeswax (StatPearls) appears in the first few entries, the product is occlusive-led whatever the category word says. If they appear late, it is not, and a "rich" cream whose only occlusive sits below the 1% line is a lotion with a heavier adjective.
  2. Find the humectants and check the season. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, propylene glycol and sorbitol (StatPearls) high on the list mean a hydration-led product, which needs something above it to hold the water when the air is dry.
  3. Count the physiologic lipids. One ceramide on its own is not the formulation with the published barrier-repair result; the result attaches to ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids together in a balanced ratio (Elias, Man & Darmstadt, 2022).
  4. For an oil, read the oil. Sunflower seed oil, olive oil and coconut oil have different published effects on barrier function and water loss (Lin et al., 2018), so the species name carries the evidence and the word "oil" carries none.
